Definition of e-learning:
e-learning can be defined as learning facilitated and supported through the use of information and communications technology. Nichols (2008) clarifies through his definition, that e-learning usually involves some form of interactivity between stakeholders.
e-learning may involve the use of some, or all, of the following technologies:·
Whatever the technology, learning remains the vital element. E-learning is no longer simply associated with distance or remote learning. The development of technology, heightened technology awareness and capability, and the diversity in technology has meant that the ‘e’ is the new tool in learning, allowing new approaches to teaching and learning.
Higgins (2002) confirms that e-learning is an effective educational tool that provides many benefits, but only if the learners involved are given choice in how their learning is delivered, are able to interact with others, are able to receive support during the process.
e-Learning can cover a broad range of activities from synchronous and asynchronous learning, to digital learning, distance learning and blended learning, or a combination of each.
